Ripples of Change: The Role of the American Church in Global Poverty

Every day, millions worldwide struggle to meet life’s most basic needs—clean water, food and safety. As followers of Christ, we are called to step into this brokenness, embodying the gospel to “the least of these.” The American Church, blessed with wealth and resources, has the opportunity to provide hope and dignity to those in desperate need, including families in Cambodia facing extreme poverty and a water crisis. Through partnerships like Rock Foundation Cambodia, we can extend Christ’s love globally, transforming lives both physically and spiritually.

The Call to Care

Jesus’ call to care for the marginalized, the poor, the needy and the hungry is a central theme of the gospel. In Matthew 25:40, Jesus reminds us, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” Not only is this call to care for others personal to Jesus, but it also knows no boundaries.

Whether in our neighborhoods, cities or across the globe, the Church is called to love thy neighbor.

But who is our neighbor? Jesus’ command in Mark 12:31 to “love your neighbor as yourself” challenges us to broaden our understanding of “neighbor” to include anyone in need, near or far. Acts 1:8 extends our idea of neighborly borders by commanding the Church to be witnesses in their own region (Judea), neighboring cities (Samaria) and then to the ends of the earth. With this new vision cast for what it means to be a neighbor, we can see that while Cambodia may feel distant, its people are just as much neighbors to the American Church as the family living next door.

The Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20 commands us to “go and make disciples of all nations.” This call encompasses not only sharing the gospel but also embodying Christ’s love through tangible acts of service, such as providing clean water for those in desperate need.

The Crisis in Cambodia

Cambodia is among the world’s poorest countries, with nearly 17% of the population living below the poverty line. (1) The water crisis in Cambodia is dire—many families rely on stagnant ponds for drinking, bathing, and cooking. These same water sources are often contaminated with animal waste and fertilizers, leading to diseases that disproportionately affect children and the elderly. (2)

The precious people we provide hot meals for through our Food and Fellowship program represent some of the most desperately poor in the country. Many of these families live in or around the city garbage dump and rely on collecting recyclables and scraps just to survive.

Contrast this scene with the abundance in the United States. The United States is among the world’s wealthiest nations, ranking approximately in the top 10%. (3) Regardless of social status, the average income in the U.S. dwarfs that of most other countries. (4) In addition to financial excess, the United States does not lack for resources either.

The American Church is uniquely positioned—financially, materially and spiritually—to be a blessing to others.

The Responsibility OF THE AMERICAN CHURCH

Scripture repeatedly calls the wealthy to care for the poor. Proverbs 22:9 states, “The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor.” In 1 John 3:17, we’re reminded, “If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?”

As followers of Christ, we are compelled by His love to extend financial and physical aid, restore dignity to our fellow image-bearers and to share the hope of the gospel for those who are most thirsty for it. The American Church, blessed with abundance, has the opportunity to live out these commands by addressing global poverty and water scarcity.

The challenge of global poverty or the clean water crisis may seem overwhelming, but it’s not a reason for the Church to stand aside.

Instead, we should approach it with the mindset that even the smallest contribution can create ripples, growing into a steady stream and eventually a powerful current of change that brings hope and relief to those in need.
