Water That Sustains, Water That Saves: Why Water is Central to Our Ministry & the Scriptures

From the very first page of Scripture, water is present.

“In the beginning… the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” (Genesis 1:1–2)

A testimony of Faithfulness

It is no accident that water appears all throughout the Bible. In Scripture, water represents life, cleansing, renewal, and God’s sustaining presence. For people living in dry, desert climates like the people of Israel, water was absolutely essential. Without it, nothing lived and nothing grew.

Throughout the Old Testament, we see God providing water when His people had none: He brought water from a rock in the wilderness (Exodus 17); David depicts the Good Shepherd leading His people beside still waters (Psalm 23); Through Isaiah, God promises streams in the desert and rivers in dry places (Isaiah 43:19).

Each time, water served as a sign of His faithfulness, a beautiful reminder that He sees His people’s needs and is faithful to meet them.

a picture of salvation

In the New Testament, water takes on even deeper meaning.

Jesus met a Samaritan woman at a well and offered her something greater than physical water. “Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst,” He said. “Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:14)

Later, Jesus stood and declared, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.” (John 7:37)

Here, water becomes a picture of salvation itself. Through the Living Water, hearts are cleansed, lives are renewed and souls are brought from death to life.

Baptism reflects this same truth. Going down into the water symbolizes death to the old life and rising out of it represents new life in Christ.

Water is not just something we need to survive—it points us to the One who gives true and eternal life.

This is why water matters so deeply to our mission.

Water and the Mission of RFC

When we help provide clean water to communities in Cambodia, we are communicating something powerful: That, like the Lord, we see their need and desire to meet it. At the same time, water wells become a natural bridge for sharing the even greater truth that while physical thirst can be quenched, there is One who alone can satisfy the deepest thirst of the soul.

Because of this, every well we drill is so much more than a number and so much more than water alone. Each well represents hundreds of precious image-bearers experiencing restored dignity, basic human needs being met and the beautiful opportunity to hear about the Savior. Every well stands as a reminder of God’s faithful provision and a testimony that He has not forgotten His people. Every well serves as a reflection of His promise that those who come to Him will never thirst again.

May we never take water, physical or spiritual, for granted. And may we continue to be vessels God uses to bring life, renewal and hope to a thirsty world.

Would you join us in prayer?

Please pray that more water wells would be drilled this year than ever before, that communities would experience both physical refreshment and spiritual renewal, and that God would continue to use Rock Foundation Cambodia to bring hope where it is needed most.
